Response to Senedd Inquiry on Culture and the new relationship with the EU for the Culture, Communications, Welsh Language, Sport, and International Relations Committee

Date: 2023–24
“The new trading arrangements have made it more complex, demanding, and costly to hire skilled workers from Europe, importing and exporting art works, and acquire relevant technologies”
Media Cymru gave evidence to the Senedd Inquiry on the impact of Brexit on the culture sector.
Our response highlighted that Brexit has had a considerable impact upon creative artists in Wales. It is more difficult for travelling shows to access and move through Europe. Hiring skilled staff from the EU has become a more complex process. Subsidy Control regulation is more bureaucratic than European State Aid. The “one-stop-shop” for information and support recommended in 2018 should be established and negotiations with the EU on a general agreement on cultural touring should continue, to ensure barriers are removed or, at least, further reduced.
