Innovators in Residence: Extended Reality (XR) Week with Alex Counsell

Media Cymru is excited to announce the inaugural residency of our new Innovators in Residence (IiR) programme. Read more about the launch of Innovators in Residence.
Our first Innovator in Residence, Alex Counsell, will be spending the week of 13–17 November in and around the Cardiff Capital Region running a full programme of engagements exploring Extended Reality (XR).
Alex Counsell is Technical Director for the Centre for Creative and Immersive Extended Reality (CCIXR) at the University of Portsmouth. This one-week residency will bring Alex’s expertise in motion capture, visual effects, virtual production and virtual reality to the Cardiff Capital Region. The programme will include workshops, masterclasses and meetings with industry partners. It will give the opportunity for those from the Welsh creative sector to explore the cutting edge of XR technology.
XR is the umbrella term for Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). The work of Alex and CCIXR covers key priority areas for Media Cymru including immersive technology and future production.

Tuesday, 14 November
Creative Cuppa: Who’s afraid of immersive technology?

Who’s it for? Anyone working for or interested in the creative industries
In partnership with Creative Cardiff, Alex will be speaking at the monthly Creative Cuppa gathering. A TED-style talk aimed at everyone across all creative sectors, followed by an informal hour to sit down, chat and eat cake! As part of this session, there will also be an opportunity to have demonstrations of new kit and equipment.
Ideas Inc.: 121 technology and creative insights sessions
When: 1 – 3pm
Where: BBC Cymru Wales, 3 Central Square, Cardiff
Who’s it for? Creative industry professionals
In this unique event, you’ll have the chance to book a 30-minute slot to connect with our distinguished expert Alex Counsell, for a 121 consultation drawing on his rich background in fields like Motion Capture, Visual Effects (VFX), Virtual Production, and Extended Realities (XR).

Join XR Network+ partners from the Universities of York, Edinburgh, Ulster and University of the Arts London, at JOMEC to find out about the project, funding opportunities and what’s in store for 2024. XR Network+ Virtual Production in the Digital Economy provides funding and support to researchers working in virtual production and XR technologies. Through a network of partnerships, XR Network+ will support growth and facilitate collaboration between academia and industry on a national stage.
