Building a truly equitable Media sector for Wales is essential to achieving Media Cymru’s aims
Media for All
Building a truly equitable Media sector for Wales is essential to achieving Media Cymru’s aims of funding bold and unique research and development towards innovation.
Across our programme, we are funding research and development towards inclusive innovation, connecting industry with academia and third sector organisations, and researching and sharing equitable ways of working for ourselves and those we work with.
We have a responsibility to be transparent and accountable to the sector and those we collaborate with. Since 2019, we’ve regularly reviewed our practices and shared insights with our community, fostering transparency and inviting constructive feedback on our progress in supporting diversity within the media sector.
We recognise that EDI is a continual practice and the purpose of our objectives is to continually progress inclusivity within our work and the media sector.
Objectives
In preparing these objectives, we:
- Reviewed EDI policies and action plans across the Centre for the Creative Economy (from 2019 to present) to inform a new strategy for Media Cymru.
- Engaged with EDI discussions across similar innovation programmes, such as Creative Informatics in Scotland and MyWorld in Bristol.
- Consulted directly with our industry partners, funded projects, applicants, and wider community.
- One-to-one follow-up conversations with individual applicants raising specific equality questions or concerns about the application processes.
- Ongoing review of literature, creative sector research and industry reports.
Media Cymru’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Objectives:
- Fund bold and innovative R&D projects that challenge perceptions and ways of working to contribute to a fairer, more equitable society.
- Continually work to ensure our work is open to all and reaches the diversity of creative communities across Cardiff and the wider city region.
- Monitor whether Media Cymru represents or exceeds a representative proportion of participants from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.
- Ensure that our commitment to EDI is visible and clearly communicated.
- Build an evidence base for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion, ensuring measurable progress and accountability.
